Electric bike insurance: e-bike cover including the motor and battery

Pedalsure e-bike insurance covers your electric bike against theft, accidental damage and malicious damage, at home and away. The motor and battery are covered as part of the bike, not as extras.

Your e-bike must be road legal in the UK as an electrically assisted pedal cycle (EAPC). You can add optional cover for yourself and your riding, and your price stays the same until your renewal date.

Is my e-bike eligible?

We cover e-bikes that are road legal in the UK as an EAPC and aren't treated as a motor vehicle. We don't cover:

  • twist-and-go e-bikes, unless the throttle only works in walk mode;
  • e-bikes that have been de-restricted or modified so they no longer meet the EAPC rules;
  • ePeds, iPeds or bikes that look like mopeds.

Not sure whether yours is an EAPC? Check the government's electric bike rules.

Optional add-ons

You choose these when you get a quote, and you can see the price with and without each one.

Optional add-on What it adds
Personal Injury & Public Liability (Bronze or Silver) Fixed payments if you're injured while riding; for example, Bronze pays £250 for a broken arm or leg. Includes cover if you injure someone or damage their property. Covers the named policyholder only, not family members
Public Liability Cover if you accidentally injure someone or damage their property while cycling, up to the limit on your schedule. Doesn't apply to claims arising in the USA or Canada, or if you already have liability cover from another source
Loss of Earnings A weekly payment if an accident stops you working, for up to 52 weeks. Nothing is paid for the first 14 days, and payments are capped at 75% of your average weekly net wage. Taken with Personal Injury cover
Accessories & Gear Accessories fixed to your bike and the clothing and kit you ride with, when your bike is stolen or damaged at the same time. Valuables such as phones aren't covered
Worldwide Travel (30 or 60 days) Cover abroad for up to 30 or 60 days in total in your policy year. When you fly, your bike must be in a rigid or hard bike box and you need an airline luggage receipt. This isn't medical travel insurance, so you'll still need that
Competition & Racing For organised events where a winner is selected. Sportives and charity rides without a winner don't need it. Professional racing isn't covered

Frequently asked questions

Do I need insurance for an electric bike in the UK?
Not if it's road legal as an EAPC: in law it's then a bicycle (gov.uk). If it isn't, it's treated as a motor vehicle and needs motor insurance. Read more →
Are the motor and battery covered?
Yes, for theft, accidental damage and malicious damage, on the same terms as the rest of the bike. Mechanical or electrical breakdown and wear and tear aren't covered.
Is a de-restricted e-bike covered?
No. A de-restricted or modified e-bike that no longer meets the EAPC rules isn't covered.
Can my family ride my insured e-bike?
Yes, if they're your partner, parent, child, brother or sister and live with you. Personal injury and liability cover, if you add them, cover only you as the named policyholder.
Am I covered if I injure someone?
Not under the standard cover. You can add optional Personal Injury & Public Liability or Public Liability cover. Liability cover doesn't apply to claims arising in the USA or Canada.
Do I need extra cover for a sportive?
No, as long as no winner is selected. For organised events with a winner, add the optional Competition & Racing cover.
Are e-MTBs covered?
Yes, on the same terms as other e-bikes, as long as they're road legal as an EAPC. Stunts, and riding on equipment designed for stunts, aren't covered.
Am I covered abroad?
The UK, Channel Islands and Isle of Man are covered as standard. Abroad, you need the optional Worldwide Travel cover for up to 30 or 60 days in total in your policy year. It isn't medical travel insurance.
Can I use my e-bike for delivery or courier work?
No. The policy doesn't cover use for hire, reward or courier services, or any business use other than commuting.
Will my price change if I claim?
Not before your renewal date. A claim can be taken into account at renewal.
How is a claim settled?
We repair or replace your bike through a specialist dealer or a reputable supplier, or pay you in cash, less the excess and up to your sum insured.
How much does e-bike insurance cost?
It depends on your bike's value, where you live and the cover you choose. Get a quote to see your exact price.
